Resident Director Position Description

“A Better Chance” is a national non-profit organization that provides academically talented students of color from underserved communities with an opportunity to attend outstanding public and private secondary schools.

THE ROLE

The Resident Director (RD) is a live-in professional who brings the ABC mission to life, creating a nurturing, family-like home where our female Scholars feel safe, supported, and empowered to pursue their academic and personal goals.

The RD oversees the Scholars’ daily routines and activities, working closely with the Executive Director, Resident Academic Director, RABC Board, school partners, and a dedicated team of staff and volunteers to ensure each Scholar’s wellbeing.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Live as a steady presence in the home - ensure the scholars’ safety, supervision and growth.
  

• Uphold a culture of integrity and accountability while creating a warm, cohesive home environment.
  

• Build community connections and opportunities.
  

• Oversee daily operations and maintenance of the household - including the cook, dinner time meals, the driver, enrollment paperwork and house finances.
  

• Cultivate strong relationships and communication with key RABC constituents.
  

• Champion the ABC mission, values and goals and adapt to evolving program needs.
  

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree preferred.

• Experience working with teenagers, mentoring and supporting youth development preferred.

• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trusting relationships with adolescents.  

• Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to assess situations thoughtfully.   

• Commitment to fostering diversity, belonging, and inclusivity (including, but not limited to, race and gender identity).

• Highly organized with strong multitasking abilities and attention to detail.

• Valid driver’s license and insurance required.  Must be willing to transport Scholars using the RABC van when necessary.

• Successful completion of a background check.

• Three professional references.

• Year round private quarters in the RABC house including utilities.

• Meals provided during the academic year with the exception of Host/Family weekends, holidays and school vacations.

• Time off during school hours, school vacations and summers.

• One full weekend a month off when scholars are with host families.

NOTE:  The Resident Director(s) may hold full-time employment elsewhere during school hours as long as it has been pre-approved in the letter of understanding and provided that:

• Such employment does not preclude carrying out the responsibilities listed above.

• The Resident Director(s) is on the premises until the last Scholars have left for school.

• The Resident Director is home Monday - Friday by 4:00 p.m. in time for dinner at 6 p.m. On those days the driver is responsible for the Scholars when they arrive home from school.

• The Resident Director(s) is home on weekends and school holidays unless the scholars are with their Host Families or home.

• There needs to be some flexibility for working from home if a scholar is ill and cannot attend school. (The Executive Director may also be able to provide support in these situations.)
